Lida Moniava placed under judicial control in Russia
Lida Moniava, the founder of the Lighthouse (Latarnia Morska) children's hospice in Moscow, has been placed under judicial control by a Russian court. She faces charges of spreading false information about the Russian military, a crime introduced following the invasion of Ukraine.
The charges are linked to a Telegram post from February 24, 2023, in which Moniava appealed for assistance for Ukrainian refugees and cited UN statistics regarding civilian casualties. If convicted, she faces a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years.
Under current judicial restrictions, Moniava is prohibited from leaving her home between 20:00 and 08:00, using the internet, or contacting witnesses. She remains under judicial control until at least October 30. Amnesty International has condemned the arrest, stating it is an attempt to silence civil society.
