Lidl adds European payment service Wero to its online shop

Since July 24, 2026 Lidl’s online store has offered the European instant‑payment service Wero as a checkout option, making it the first grocery retailer in Germany to integrate the system. Wero, created by the European Payments Initiative, processes SEPA real‑time transfers directly from a customer’s Giro account at one of the 18 participating banks. During checkout customers select Wero, are redirected to their banking app or presented with a QR code, and confirm the payment with biometric or PIN authentication. Refunds follow the same path, returning funds to the original bank account. The rollout is limited to online sales; in‑store acceptance is expected to expand gradually.

Wero is positioned as an alternative to PayPal and credit‑card payments, emphasizing that bank details are not shared with merchants and that transactions are secured within the banking app.
