Consumer tests show discount brands outperform premium products
Recent consumer product tests in Germany highlight the high quality and value of discount supermarket private labels compared to established premium brands.
In a facial cream test conducted by Öko-Test, Lidl’s Cien brand (specifically ‘Cien Tagespflege reichhaltig LSF 15’) received a ‘very good’ rating, outperforming several more expensive brands. The testing focused on ingredients, allergens, and mineral oil contamination.
Similarly, in a study of butter cookies, Öko-Test found that many popular brands, including the market leader Leibniz by Bahlsen, performed poorly due to pollutants. In contrast, budget private labels from Lidl, Penny, and Rewe received ‘very good’ ratings for being free of harmful substances and unnecessary additives.
Other consumer evaluations include hair care and dairy products. At dm, customer reviews highly rate affordable conditioners under 5 euros, such as Pantene Pro-V. Meanwhile, Stiftung Warentest evaluated 22 whipping cream products, noting that while many were rated ‘good’, three achieved ‘very good’ taste ratings, including some low-cost options.
