Lidl delays megamarket construction in Berane

The German retail chain Lidl has yet to begin construction on a planned megamarket in Berane, Montenegro, despite having purchased approximately nine hectares of land near the city center for nearly two million euros in late 2023.

To date, the company has paid approximately one million euros to the municipality. The remaining payment was contingent upon the removal of a flea market, the demolition of local premises, and the preparation of the land for its intended use. Although these conditions were met over a year ago, construction has not commenced. While there have been rumors that Lidl might withdraw from the project, local authorities deny these claims.

Berane official Đole Lutovac stated that the delay is due to the company’s business policy of opening multiple locations across Montenegro simultaneously. Local administration officials expressed confidence that the project will proceed once the company is ready to launch its planned locations across the country.
