Lidl discount fan sale triggers crowds and police action in French stores

On 2 July 2026 Lidl France launched a promotion offering around 200,000 fans and portable air‑conditioning units at reduced prices, advertised at roughly €179 each. The steep discount prompted massive queues and confrontations at numerous outlets across the country, including Paris, Nanterre and Sevran. Police were called to manage the crowds; in one case a store entrance was damaged.

Consumer‑protection deputy Delphine Batho reported the incident to the French competition and consumer authority (DGCCRF), requesting a review of possible misleading advertising, unclear stock information and safety lapses. Lidl denied any unfair practices, attributing the shortages to logistics and unexpectedly high demand, and noted that the promotion had been publicly announced. Observers noted that some purchased units were later resold on platforms such as Leboncoin at higher prices. The DGCCRF may impose administrative measures or recommendations pending its investigation.
