Lidl expansion sparks wage discussions in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The upcoming entry of the retail chain Lidl into the Bosnia and Herzegovina market has prompted discussions regarding wages and employment benefits among local retail workers. While official salary figures for Lidl have not been confirmed, job advertisements highlighting permanent contracts, holiday bonuses, and other benefits have led employees to weigh the potential for increased income and job security against their current positions.

Local business owners, such as Mirko Savičić of the retail chain Šiki, expressed skepticism regarding a mass exodus of staff to the foreign competitor. Savičić noted that while there is much speculation about salary differences, the actual gap may not be substantial. He suggested that domestic companies maintain an advantage by offering a more flexible work atmosphere and better understanding of local working conditions, contrasting this with the potentially stricter oversight found in foreign corporations.

Other local companies, including Fructa Trade, also indicated they do not expect Lidl's arrival to significantly disrupt the existing labor market.
