Lidl Greece named top value retailer while Russian chain Mere exits market

Lidl Greece was awarded the BestBuyAward 2026‑2027 as the No. 1 retailer for quality‑price balance for the second consecutive year. The award, based on an independent study by iCERTIAS, highlighted Lidl’s performance in fresh bakery, clothing, dairy and eggs. CEO and President of the Board Millos Forozidis said the recognition confirms the company’s daily commitment to offering high‑quality products at affordable prices to Greek households.

At the same time, the Russian discount chain Mere, owned by the Shnayder family, is winding down its Greek operations after EU sanctions targeted its owner. The chain, once planning 80 stores, has shrunk to 11 locations in northern Greece and faces closure, leaving around 170 employees uncertain about their jobs. The sanctions, part of the European Commission’s latest package, aim to curb Russian business influence in the EU.
