Wero faces low consumer awareness in Europe

Wero, the European digital payment service designed to provide strategic independence from US-based providers like PayPal, faces low consumer awareness two years after its launch. A representative survey by Verivox and Innofact indicates that only 39 percent of German adults correctly identify Wero as a payment service, while 31 percent have never heard of it.

Developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), Wero is currently available in Germany, Belgium, and France, with plans for further expansion. The service facilitates direct mobile person-to-person (P2P) transfers and is increasingly being integrated into online retail. For instance, Lidl has added Wero as a payment option for its online shop.

Despite these developments, consumer skepticism remains high; approximately 58 percent of survey respondents doubt Wero will become Europe’s most popular payment service. The gap between technical availability and widespread usage remains a significant challenge for the initiative.
