Lidl introduces natural yellow-fleshed watermelons in Romania

Lidl stores in Romania are currently offering yellow-fleshed watermelons, a variety that has drawn significant consumer curiosity due to its unusual appearance. While the exterior resembles a standard watermelon, the interior is yellow rather than the traditional red.

Experts clarify that these watermelons are a completely natural variety and are not genetically modified. The yellow color is a biological trait resulting from natural pigments; unlike red watermelons, which get their color from lycopene, these varieties contain high levels of beta-carotene and very little to no lycopene.

Nutritionally, the yellow variety is considered as healthy as the red one, offering sources of vitamin C and potassium. The flavor profile may differ, often featuring sweeter, more fruity notes similar to honey, mango, or apricot. Availability may vary by location and stock levels.
