Lidl pricing strategy uses red signage for regular prices
Retailers use red signage to capture consumer attention, as the color is traditionally associated with discounts and special offers. However, recent changes in signage design, specifically at the discounter Lidl, may lead to consumer confusion.
At Lidl, red text on a white background is used to indicate regular sale prices, whereas promotional or action prices are distinguished by white digits on a red background. Because the visual signal of the color red is so strong, shoppers glancing quickly may mistake standard prices for discounts.
To avoid errors, consumers are advised to check the product name, packaging size, and specific price details rather than relying solely on color. In cases of electronic price tags, colors may change centrally but do not inherently guarantee a price reduction. For perishable goods, price reductions due to imminent expiration may follow different labeling rules.
