Lidl supermarket construction sparks controversy at former Mauthausen camp site

Construction has begun in Leobersdorf, Austria, for a new Lidl supermarket and distribution center. The site is located on the former grounds of a women's camp that was part of the Mauthausen concentration camp system.

The Mauthausen International Committee has called for an immediate halt to the construction. The committee is demanding that the unbuilt portions of the former concentration camp be permanently preserved as a memorial space, stating that the current development is “in obvious contradiction to the principles of modern culture of remembrance.”
