Lidl threatens to leave Hoek van Holland without supermarket expansion

Lidl has expressed concerns that it may be forced to close its supermarket in the center of Hoek van Holland if it cannot expand its Brinkplein location. The retailer has requested the Rotterdam City Council to instruct the municipal executive to include its expansion plans in the ongoing redevelopment plans for the square.

Lidl maintains that the current store is too small to meet modern standards. The company claims the municipality has supported the expansion for years, citing a 2022 ambition document and advice from consultancy firm DTNP, which suggested expanding the floor space to approximately 1,200 square meters. Lidl argues that the expansion is vital for the center's economic strength and would serve as a major visitor draw.

A dispute has arisen regarding communication; Lidl states it submitted formal requests for the expansion to be considered in October 2025, but the municipality recently claimed it had “not received” the request. Lidl contends that the current redevelopment permits do not account for the supermarket's growth needs.
