Lidl to build supermarket and residential units on Sylt

Lidl has broken ground on a new mixed-use development project named ‘Nii Kiarwai’ in Tinnum on the North Sea island of Sylt. The project aims to address the island's acute housing shortage by constructing 15 residential units located above a modern supermarket facility.

The development is situated on a 16,000-square-meter site. The new building will house a 1,600-square-meter Lidl store alongside spaces for a pharmacy, a drugstore, and regional providers. The residential units, ranging from 44 to 78 square meters, are specifically intended for island residents, commuters, and skilled workers to help alleviate local market pressures.

Jan Brenn, Chief Real Estate Officer for Lidl Germany, described the project as a milestone in site development that combines architectural quality with regional value. The construction is expected to be completed by spring 2028, with the project aiming for gold certification in sustainability.
