Liechtenstein advocates for UN reform at General Assembly
Liechtenstein is participating in the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The delegation is led by Hereditary Prince Alois, who met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to reaffirm support for the UN80 reform initiative and the necessity of a functional United Nations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sabine Monauni addressed the General Assembly, emphasizing that for small states, international law and functioning international institutions are essential foundations for security and sovereignty. She advocated for a stronger UN role in peace and security, particularly when the Security Council is blocked, and highlighted Liechtenstein’s veto initiative as a tool for action.
Key focus areas for the delegation include UN reform, the defense of international law, and the protection of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court against political attacks. Additionally, Liechtenstein expressed support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and joined over 20 nations in supporting a declaration for the human-centered and responsible development of Artificial Intelligence.
