Liechtenstein faces labor shortage despite high median salaries

Liechtenstein is currently facing a labor shortage despite its status as an exceptionally wealthy Alpine principality. According to official data from the national statistical office, the median gross monthly salary in 2024 was 7,401 Swiss francs, a figure that includes the 13th-month salary and other allowances.

While high wages make the country an attractive destination for foreign workers, obtaining residency is distinct from the right to work. Citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) have the right to work in Liechtenstein, but permanent residency is subject to specific quotas. Cross-border workers face simpler regulations.

The labor market is characterized by high employment and very low unemployment, with the unemployment rate standing at just 1.4 percent as of late 2023.
