Liechtenstein cyberattack steals data of 31,000 entities
During the night of 29‑30 July 2026 an unknown party gained unauthorized digital access to Liechtenstein’s Register of Beneficial Owners (VwbP). Approximately 31,000 data copies – names, birth dates, nationalities and other personal details of the owners of companies, foundations and trusts – were stolen. The breach did not include financial information such as assets, revenue or dividends.
The Liechtenstein government immediately convened a crisis team led by Regierungschefin Brigitte Haas and Justice Minister Emanuel Schädler. The Office of Informatics took the affected system offline and temporarily disconnected other sensitive platforms for precautionary checks. No ransom demand has been received, and there is no evidence that the stolen data have appeared on the dark web. Investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators and assess the impact on the principality’s reputation as a secure financial centre.
