Liepāja emergency services break into apartment to rescue child
On the evening of October 12, emergency services in Liepāja, Latvia, were forced to break into an apartment to ensure the safety of a young child. Police received reports that a woman was consuming alcohol in the presence of a child and refused to open the door upon their arrival.
Because the woman would not cooperate and relatives could not be reached, firefighters were called to the scene. Using an aerial ladder, responders attempted to persuade the woman to open the door through a balcony, but she refused while holding the child. To gain entry, emergency personnel eventually broke a window.
A medical team examined the approximately one-year-old boy and confirmed he was in good health. The child was subsequently placed in the care of a relative. Authorities have initiated an administrative process regarding the failure to fulfill child care duties, and the court has been informed.
