Liepāja prepares for 2027 European Capital of Culture designation
Liepāja is preparing for its designation as the European Capital of Culture 2027 through several upcoming initiatives. From September 28 to October 3, the city will host the “UPDATE: democratic technologies” media arts and technology festival. This event brings together artists, engineers, and researchers to explore how technology impacts society, focusing on themes of accessibility, transparency, and inclusivity. The festival features workshops, symposia, and exhibitions utilizing VR/AR/XR, 3D scanning, and bio-art.
Additionally, the “Liepāja 2027” Foundation has announced the upcoming unveiling of its full “(ne)miers” program on October 9. The comprehensive program is expected to include over 500 events, such as exhibitions, concerts, and conferences, designed to boost regional international recognition. The official year of the European Capital of Culture will begin on January 22, 2027, with opening events in Kuldīga and Aizpute, followed by celebrations in Liepāja on January 23.
Other preparatory activities include the “Manor Hackathon,” held from September 29 to 30, where tourism entrepreneurs and cultural organizers from Kuldīga and South Kurzeme work to develop sustainable ideas for historical sites and cultural routes.
