Life Biosciences administers first human cell‑reprogramming therapy for glaucoma

Life Biosciences reported that on 9 June 2026 the first human participant received an experimental injection, ER‑100, designed to re‑program aged optic‑nerve cells. The therapy activates three transcription‑factor genes, aiming to restore youthful function to damaged retinal‑nerve fibers in a patient with glaucoma, an eye disease that can cause blindness.

The approach builds on earlier animal work where partial re‑programming regenerated neurons and improved vision. Safety is a primary concern; the eye was chosen as a test site because it is isolated and effects can be closely monitored. Life Biosciences, co‑founded by Harvard biologist David Sinclair, sees the trial as a step toward broader anti‑aging treatments that could target other age‑related conditions. The company has recently secured substantial investment to advance its research, but the therapy remains in early clinical testing.
