Life insurance fraud in France reaches 24.8 million euros

Fraudulent activities targeting life insurance contracts in France have reached 24.8 million euros in 2025, nearly doubling compared to the previous year. According to the Agence de lutte contre la fraude à l’assurance (ALFA), 98 percent of these detected frauds involve savings contracts where capital is awaiting redemption.

Criminals primarily utilize identity theft, document forgery, and the use of fake bank details (RIB) to divert funds. The use of a fake RIB is particularly effective because it allows fraudsters to redirect capital to a third-party account just before a redemption request is made, often without the policyholder's knowledge. This method does not require the simulation of an accident or illness, making it a highly efficient target for theft.

Broadly, ALFA identified 946.3 million euros in fraud across all insurance branches in 2025, a 4.9 percent increase. The agency estimates that total annual fraud, including undetected cases, may reach 2.5 billion euros.
