LIFE Teixeres project restores 80% of yew habitats in Valencia
The LIFE Teixeres project, a major environmental initiative in the Valencian Community, has entered its final phase with 80% of planned plantations successfully completed. Funded 70% by the European Union’s LIFE program with a total budget of approximately 2.4 million euros, the project aims to restore and protect the habitat of the yew tree (Taxus baccata).
To date, 13,921 forest specimens have been planted across 48 plots in 25 municipalities within the Natura 2000 network. This includes 1,900 yew trees intended to strengthen natural populations and increase resilience against climate change. The project covers 250 hectares across ten forest areas.
A key component of the initiative is the establishment of a network of 12 clonal orchards to preserve the genetic diversity of native yew trees. Four orchards have already been established in Alicante, with two more planned for Valencia in the coming weeks, and the remaining six to be completed in Castelló during the project's final stage.
