Lifeguards rescue 16 German children from North Sea near Ameland

Sixteen German children attending a summer camp were rescued from the North Sea near Ameland after being swept away by unexpectedly strong currents. The group was unable to return to the shoreline on their own and fell into a state of panic as they were pulled further out to sea.

KNRM lifeguards responded immediately to the emergency. Two rescuers entered the water first to keep the children afloat; one lifeguard swam seven children to shore, while her colleague used a surfboard to hold the remaining group against the waves. A jet ski was also deployed to pick up victims from deeper water and transport them to the beach.

All sixteen children were brought safely to land without serious injury, though the incident caused significant emotional distress for both the children and their supervisors. Days after the rescue, the lifeguards visited the camp group, where they were met with applause and embraces from the children and camp leaders.
