Lifeguards rescue mother and child in Chalkidiki

Two lifeguards successfully rescued a mother and her young child after they were swept away by waves at a beach in Nea Plagia, Chalkidiki, on Sunday afternoon, August 16.

Despite a yellow flag being displayed due to weather conditions and strong southerly winds, the 41-year-old woman entered the sea with her child. A large wave struck her, causing her to lose consciousness and be pulled into the water. While attempting to protect her child, she was hit by a second wave, resulting in serious injury and the ingestion of water, sand, and pebbles.

A bystander managed to hold the woman in place until lifeguards Giorgos Dibinoudis and Zoi Konstantinou Tsaganou arrived. The lifeguards provided emergency oxygen and first aid for over 50 minutes, noting that the woman's oxygen saturation had dropped to approximately 50 percent. She was subsequently taken into care by EKAV in stable condition.
