Lifeguards rescue woman from heavy waves in Chania
Lifeguards performed a dramatic rescue of a woman caught in heavy waves at Kavros Apokoronas beach in Chania on Monday morning, August 10. The incident occurred approximately ten minutes before the official start of the lifeguards' shift, while personnel were preparing and opening their observation towers.
Panteleimon Kyriakakis noticed the woman was trapped by strong currents and unable to return to shore. Despite the difficult sea conditions, he entered the water to reach her, supported by Menelaos Theodorakatos, who acted as backup. A third lifeguard, Philippos Frangoulis, also arrived to assist from a nearby tower. The woman was eventually brought to shore in an exhausted state.
Lifeguards noted that during days with red flag warnings, extra personnel are deployed to manage increased risks. Authorities have reiterated warnings that entering the sea under such conditions is extremely dangerous.
