Lifestyle and dietary habits can reduce stomach cancer risks

Medical experts suggest that lifestyle and dietary choices can mitigate the risk of stomach cancer, even for individuals with a genetic predisposition. Sharon Shiraga, a gastroenterologist at the University of Southern California, recommends limiting processed and canned foods, such as fast food and sugary drinks, which often contain high levels of salt, sugar, nitrites, and nitrates that can damage the stomach lining.

To promote gastric health, experts suggest eating smaller meals—four to six times a day rather than three large meals—to reduce the load on the stomach and insulin response. A diet rich in vegetables and antioxidants, such as the Mediterranean diet, is encouraged, while intake of starchy foods like potatoes and pasta should be moderated.

Additionally, regular physical activity is vital, as abdominal obesity increases cancer risks due to hormonal activity in fat tissue. Regarding cardiovascular health, while late-night eating does not directly cause chronic hypertension, consuming heavy, salty meals late at night can disrupt the body's circadian rhythm and affect kidney function, potentially leading to temporary increases in systolic blood pressure the following morning.
