Diabetes research: lifestyle and technology impact management

At the 62nd annual Congress of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Milan, several key findings regarding type 2 diabetes management and prevention were presented.

Research led by Wenxin Xu of City University of Hong Kong indicates that lifestyle factors can significantly mitigate genetic risks. A study of tens of thousands in the UK showed that regular physical activity and a diet low in ultra-processed foods (UPF) could reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 70%. Even for those with high genetic predisposition, these healthy habits halved the risk.

Regarding technology, real-world data from the US involving nearly 28,000 adults suggests that Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is linked to improved outcomes. Use of CGM was associated with a 45% lower risk of death at 12 months and a 36% lower risk at 24 months for those on basal insulin, alongside reduced cardiovascular complications. However, experts noted the need for more equitable regional access to these technologies.

Additionally, a study from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin explored diabetes remission. Findings suggest that intensive caloric restriction can lead to remission—defined as HbA1c levels below 6.5% for at least three months without medication—particularly in individuals with a more recent diagnosis.
