Lifestyle changes to manage varicose vein symptoms

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that occur when valves inside the veins do not function correctly, causing blood to pool instead of flowing toward the heart. While lifestyle changes cannot eliminate existing varicose veins, they can reduce symptoms such as pain, heaviness, itching, and swelling.

Recommended management strategies include:

• Regular physical activity: Walking and exercise strengthen calf muscles, which act as a natural pump to assist blood return. • Elevation: Resting with legs positioned above heart level can help reduce swelling. • Movement: Avoiding prolonged sitting or standing by changing positions frequently and performing ankle movements. • Compression: Using medical compression stockings can alleviate heaviness and swelling, though proper sizing and pressure should be determined by a physician. • Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight reduces pressure on leg veins.

Medical consultation is advised if symptoms include significant pain, skin discoloration, or swelling. In some cases, a Doppler ultrasound may be required to evaluate blood flow.
