Lifestyle choices can lower Alzheimer’s risk, experts say

Research indicates that about 40 % of dementia cases worldwide are linked to modifiable risk factors such as poor diet, inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol use, depression and social isolation. Health experts stress three key pillars for brain health: a nutrient‑rich diet (e.g., Mediterranean or MIND patterns), regular aerobic exercise and adequate, restorative sleep.

In South Florida, Aetna is promoting public‑education efforts during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, offering members nutrition counseling, wellness coaching and guidance on physical‑activity plans. Meanwhile, Dr. Jaren Trost of Optum in New Mexico advises patients to stay active, maintain social connections and seek medical evaluation for sleep problems, noting that early signs of cognitive decline often appear as difficulties managing medications or finances.
