Lifestyle factors such as walking pace and social media use impact health

Recent studies highlight the impact of lifestyle habits on longevity and social well-being. Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, analyzing data from the UK Biobank, suggests that both the number of daily steps and walking pace are linked to reduced premature death risk. Individuals taking between 7,500 and 10,000 steps daily showed significant benefits. Additionally, maintaining a pace of at least 90 steps per minute for 30 minutes a day was associated with a lower risk of death from all causes.

Separately, a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine examined the relationship between social media use and social isolation among young adults. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that spending more than two hours a day on social platforms can double the likelihood of feeling socially isolated. Those visiting social media platforms 58 or more times per week faced a three-fold increase in the risk of feeling isolated compared to infrequent users. Experts suggest this may be due to social media replacing face-to-face communication or users feeling excluded when viewing others' activities.
