Lifestyle habits and nutrition impact long-term eye health

Lifestyle choices, including physical activity and nutrition, play a critical role in maintaining ocular health and preventing age-related vision loss. Regular moderate exercise improves ocular blood circulation and optimizes blood flow to the retina and optic nerve. Research indicates that moderate physical activity is associated with a 25% lower risk of developing glaucoma compared to sedentary lifestyles, and exercising at least three times a week is linked to a lower incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Dietary habits also significantly impact retinal health. Consuming foods rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids can help delay the onset of various pathologies. Conversely, excessive sugar consumption poses a threat to the retina, particularly for individuals with diabetes, as poor glucose control is a primary risk factor for diabetic retinopathy. Because the retina has high metabolic activity, it is highly sensitive to oxidative stress and vascular health, making a diet high in sugars and ultra-processed foods a risk for retinal disease progression.
