Lifestyle habits influence gut and heart health

Health experts highlight how lifestyle habits, including posture and post-meal activities, significantly impact digestive and cardiovascular health.

Surgeon Álvaro Campillo warns that poor posture during meals, such as slouching or crossing legs, can negatively affect the gut microbiome. This habit may lead to slower intestinal transit, increased gas accumulation, and reduced oxygen supply to the digestive tract. Such issues can result in reflux, heartburn, bloating, and constipation. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend sitting upright with a straight back and both feet on the floor, which can reduce gas accumulation by up to ten times compared to slouching.

Additionally, evening habits play a crucial role in heart health. Engaging in light exercise, such as a moderate walk after dinner, can help stabilize blood sugar levels and improve endothelial function. Conversely, late-night snacking may disrupt the body's circadian rhythm and contribute to high blood pressure and weight gain, as nighttime food consumption often involves highly processed, calorie-dense, and sodium-rich foods.
