Lifestyle habits linked to increased risk of hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, often develops without noticeable symptoms, potentially leading to serious complications such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. While genetics play a role, lifestyle habits are significant contributors to rising blood pressure levels.

Key habits that increase risk include excessive salt consumption. High sodium intake, found in processed foods, snacks, and instant noodles, causes fluid retention that forces the heart to pump harder. Conversely, maintaining adequate potassium intake from foods like bananas and yogurt can help support blood vessel function.

Sedentary behavior and lack of physical activity also contribute to higher blood pressure and metabolic issues. Health experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. Additionally, poor sleep quality and excessive alcohol consumption are identified as factors that can disrupt bodily mechanisms and significantly elevate blood pressure.
