Lifestyle interventions and diet linked to improved elderly health

New research and systematic reviews are highlighting the critical role of lifestyle interventions in maintaining autonomy and cognitive health among the elderly.

A systematic review published in the journal Nutrition, developed as part of the Italian National Guidelines promoted by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, links higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet with reduced frailty in individuals over 60. This evidence is being integrated into national guidelines to help delay the onset of disability and reduce the socio-sanitary costs associated with elderly care.

In a separate study published in The Lancet, the LatAm-FINGERS project demonstrated that intensive, continuous support significantly enhances cognitive benefits. The study, which involved 1,065 participants across 11 Latin American countries and was funded by the Alzheimer's Association, found that a structured program combining supervised exercise, nutritional counseling, cognitive training, and social support resulted in a 55% greater improvement in cognitive abilities compared to a flexible lifestyle program over a two-year period.
