Lifestyle interventions impact biological age and weight management
New research published in Nature Medicine suggests that biological age, measured through epigenetic biomarkers and DNA methylation, can be influenced by specific lifestyle interventions. A study analyzing data from 51 longitudinal studies found that a Mediterranean diet, regular exercise, and certain medications for diabetes and weight regulation may help slow the aging process.
Conversely, the study indicated that over-the-counter dietary supplements had little to no significant impact on these epigenetic markers. Experts note that while aging cannot be stopped, managing biological age through diet and physical activity is a more effective strategy than relying on supplements.
In a related context regarding weight management, experts suggest that achieving a caloric deficit through high-volume, low-calorie whole foods—such as legumes and seasonal vegetables—can trigger natural hormonal responses similar to those targeted by modern obesity medications. These dietary choices help stabilize blood sugar and improve satiety, facilitating long-term weight maintenance without the need for pharmaceutical intervention.
