Lifestyle modifications reduce chronic disease risk in prediabetes
Long-term research and nutritional studies highlight the importance of lifestyle interventions in managing blood sugar and preventing chronic diseases. A 21-year follow-up analysis of the Diabetes Prevention Program, published in JAMA, found that intensive lifestyle modifications—including weight loss, balanced diet, and regular physical activity—resulted in a 21% reduction in multimorbidity among high-risk adults with prediabetes.
The study noted that while lifestyle changes were effective, pharmacological intervention with metformin did not show a statistically significant reduction in the risk of developing multiple chronic conditions compared to a placebo. Although over 80% of participants eventually developed at least two chronic illnesses, those in the lifestyle modification group were less likely to suffer from severe combinations of conditions.
In terms of dietary support, certain natural ingredients have been studied for their potential role in metabolic health. These include cinnamon for insulin sensitivity, aloe vera, jamun (Indian blackberry), bitter gourd for glucose-lowering effects, and fenugreek seeds for improved glucose metabolism. However, medical experts emphasize that these foods are not replacements for prescribed treatments and should be part of a balanced diet under professional medical guidance.
