Lifeway Research finds small‑group Bible study boosts discipleship

Lifeway Research released a survey of 2,130 U.S. Protestant churchgoers conducted from March 19‑26, 2025. The study measured discipleship across eight indicators and found that participants who attend a small‑group Bible study five or more times a month scored an average of 74.1, compared with 60.4 for those who never attend. Those meeting three to four times a month scored 72.4, and once or twice a month scored 67.2.

The report notes that frequent small‑group attendees also report higher involvement in worship services, congregational responsibilities, and community ministry. Executive Director Scott McConnell said, “We have seen a consistent pattern over the years of higher levels of discipleship among those heavily involved in small groups.” Sunday School director Ken Braddy added that small groups create conditions where discipleship flourishes, rather than merely adding another church event.
