Lifeway Research: U.S. Protestants increasingly view some biblical truths as obsolete

A study by Lifeway Research indicates that while U.S. Protestant churchgoers maintain high confidence in their ability to understand and explain the Bible, an increasing minority believes certain biblical truths have lost relevance or become obsolete.

According to the data, 91% of respondents believe they can read a passage of the Bible and understand its relevance to them, and 95% enjoy exploring Scripture. Furthermore, approximately 80% feel confident in their ability to address others' questions or doubts regarding the Bible's truthfulness or morality.

Despite this confidence, 56% of churchgoers report finding it challenging to make sense of the Bible when reading it independently. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, noted that while many enjoy studying the text, some are becoming selective about which passages they choose to believe.
