Liga MX confirms permanent block on promotion and relegation

Liga MX has officially formalized its regulations for the 2026-2027 season, confirming that the system of promotion and relegation remains blocked. Under Article 35 of the new regulations, top-tier clubs are guaranteed their positions regardless of on-field performance, while teams in the Expansion league have no pathway to ascend to the highest category.

This decision effectively establishes a permanent closed model for Mexican football. While the lack of movement was previously attributed to pandemic-related pauses and certification processes, the new regulations solidify the current structure. The relegation coefficient table remains in place, though it no longer carries the consequence of division movement. The last team to achieve promotion through sporting merit was Atlético de San Luis in 2019.
