Liga MX seeks return of Mexican clubs to Copa Libertadores

Liga MX President Francisco Iturbide has formally requested that Mexican clubs be allowed to participate in CONMEBOL competitions, specifically the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, as invited guests. This move seeks to end the absence of Mexican teams from South American club tournaments, which has lasted since 2016.

While the Liga MX leadership argues that the inclusion of Mexican clubs would add value to South American competitions, the proposal faces significant opposition. FIFA has reportedly rejected initial requests, citing directives that aim to prevent clubs from different confederations from competing in the same continental tournament. CONCACAF also remains a point of resistance.

If the proposal were to succeed, it would present logistical challenges for South American clubs, particularly those from Brazil, due to the increased travel distances and physical strain on players. The Liga MX is using the precedent of the Mexican national team participating in the Copa América to support its argument for club inclusion.
