Liga MX serves as financial destination for South American talent

The Liga MX serves primarily as a financial destination for South American talent rather than a competitive market for Mexican players. While clubs in Mexico frequently recruit players from Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil, very few Mexican players have moved to South American leagues.

Matías Patanian, an ambassador for River Plate, notes that the lack of a successful ‘test case’ of a Mexican player excelling in more demanding South American environments prevents a reciprocal flow. He suggests that while the financial stability and lack of relegation in Mexico make it an attractive destination for South American assets, the cultural and competitive gap remains a barrier.

In recent developments, two Mexican players have made moves to South American clubs. Forward Joao Maleck has joined Plaza Colonia in Uruguay’s second division, while defender José Juan Manríquez has signed with Universidad Católica in Ecuador’s top flight.
