Liège schools face closures and unrest amid student protests

Spontaneous student protests have swept through several schools in Liège and surrounding municipalities, leading to the closure of dozens of secondary institutions. The demonstrations, which began early in the morning, have seen varying levels of conduct. While some groups, such as those at E.C.C.S.A, reported peaceful blockades involving both students and teachers, other incidents involved significant property damage and violence.

Police reported numerous instances of vandalism and the throwing of projectiles, including eggs, apples, firecrackers, and barriers. The Hors-Château district was particularly affected by heavy damage. These incidents resulted in six arrests.

Students are demanding smaller class sizes, increased support for teachers, and better accessibility within the education system. Education Minister Valérie Glatigny has criticized the movement, suggesting that students are being “instrumentalized.” The unrest appears to be influenced by similar student strikes occurring in France.
