Light-based scanning may detect fatal intestinal disease in premature infants

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a potentially fatal intestinal inflammation, remains a critical challenge in neonatal intensive care, particularly for premature and low-birth-weight infants. While medically managed cases have a mortality rate of approximately 7%, surgical cases see mortality rates rise to between 20% and 30%. Survivors often face long-term complications, including intestinal strictures, nutritional issues, and short bowel syndrome.

Clinical decision-making is complicated by the lack of specific biomarkers and the difficulty in determining exactly when a patient transitions from needing medical management to requiring surgery. Surgeons must balance the necessity of removing damaged tissue with the need to preserve enough intestine for future growth.

New research suggests a potential breakthrough using light-based scanning. A pilot study involving 96 infants demonstrated that infrared and visible light analysis could identify NEC. While the study produced some false positives, researchers plan to launch large-scale testing of this technology within the next year to determine its viability as a routine diagnostic tool in neonatal units.
