Light reports R$ 50 million loss due to cable theft in Rio de Janeiro

The utility company Light reports that the theft of recloser cables has caused losses exceeding R$ 50 million. Between 2025 and June of this year, thefts damaged 34 pieces of equipment. Each recloser costs approximately R$ 1.5 million and is essential for quickly restoring power after interruptions.

Security footage has captured criminals in Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods such as Grajaú and Tijuca removing cables that connect transformers to buildings. These thefts have led to power outages for local residents. Reported incidents have also occurred in the North Zone of Rio, including Méier, Cachambi, Engenho de Dentro, Engenho Novo, and Vila Isabel.
