Lightning Sparks Church Explosion in Acámbaro, Mexico, Injuring Five

A lightning strike hit the sacristy and adjacent storage room of the Catholic church in the community of San Antonio de Pantaleón, Acámbaro, Guanajuato, detonating a stock of pyrotechnic material that had been kept for upcoming patron saint festivities. The blast damaged part of the building’s structure, destroyed interior furnishings and resulted in five people being hurt. A teenager with serious injuries was taken to the General Hospital, while the other four received on‑site medical aid. Firefighters, paramedics and civil‑protection teams secured the site, cleared debris and ensured no unexploded material remained, while the surrounding area was cordoned off for safety.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon amid a severe electrical storm, prompting local residents to flee their homes after hearing the explosion. Authorities are conducting inspections to assess further risks.
