Lightning spate hits Eastern Norway as yellow warning issued

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute issued a yellow warning for lightning over Østlandet and parts of Agder on Wednesday, cautioning residents to avoid outdoor activities due to fire and flood risks. The following day, nearly 15,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the region, including about 200 in Oslo alone.

The severe thunderstorms disrupted the Norway Cup, forcing all matches in Oslo to be postponed to Friday, and caused power outages that halted the T‑bane subway system. Meteorologists Marit Berger and Leonidas Tsotouridis warned that the intense activity could persist for several more hours, emphasizing the dangers of lightning‑induced fires and the need for protective measures such as proper electric‑vehicle charging safeguards.
