Lightning strike causes fire at Grandview Plaza apartment complex

A lightning strike during severe thunderstorms on Saturday evening ignited a fire at the 36-unit Geary Estates Apartments in Grandview Plaza. The strike hit the center portion of the building, prompting a multi-agency emergency response from fire departments in Grandview Plaza, Junction City, Geary County, and Fort Riley.

Fire Chief Jeremy Bramwell noted that firefighting efforts were complicated by multiple simultaneous storms and shifting winds. While the fire was contained to the affected building, water damage has extended throughout the apartment complex.

No injuries or fatalities were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents, and the Junction City Animal Shelter has offered temporary care for displaced residents' pets.
