Lightweight trekking e-bikes emerge in recent performance tests

A recent comparison of trekking e-bikes highlights a growing trend toward lightweight models. While many standard e-bikes weigh 25 kilograms or more, new lightweight trekking e-bikes utilizing the Bosch Performance Line SX motor are weighing just over 20 kilograms.

In a test of three models—the Kalkhoff Endeavour L Excite, Canyon Pathlite:ON fly 6, and KTM Macina Sport SX 20—the Kalkhoff Endeavour L Excite was named the winner. The Kalkhoff model weighs 21.7 kilograms and features a 400-watt-hour battery and a 12-speed Shimano XT shifting system. It is designed with gravel-style tires to provide stability on both asphalt and unpaved surfaces.

Additionally, e-bike users can utilize a common feature known as start or walk assistance. This function allows a pedelec to move at speeds up to 6 km/h without pedaling, which is particularly useful for starting on inclines or maneuvering heavy bikes. This feature is often activated by holding down the plus button on the handlebar, though specific methods may vary by manufacturer.
