Ligue 2 clubs face budget disparities and coaching changes

The financial landscape of France's Ligue 2 for the 2026-2027 season reveals significant budgetary disparities among its 18 clubs. While the average budget per team is approximately 18 million euros, the median stands at only 13 million euros. FC Metz leads the division with a 40 million euro budget, followed by AS Saint-Étienne and FC Nantes, both at 30 million euros. In contrast, US Boulogne operates with 7 million euros, representing a nearly sixfold difference between the highest and lowest budgets.

These financial figures highlight a precarious economic situation for the league. In 2025, the combined turnover for the clubs was 201.736 million euros, while operating expenses reached 417.295 million euros, resulting in a net loss of 75.429 million euros for the championship.

On the pitch, managerial instability is also evident. FC Nantes has dismissed Michel Der Zakarian after just three matches and three defeats, including a 5-2 loss to Rodez. Other notable coaching updates include Ian Cathro joining Saint-Étienne and Luc Holtz taking over at FC Metz.
