Liguria expands university housing with 352 new beds
A total of 352 new student beds are being introduced across the Liguria region, funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) through the Ministry of University and Research. The expansion aims to address housing shortages and rising costs for students attending the University of Genoa.
The new accommodations are distributed among three cities: 237 beds in Genoa across nine residences, 60 beds in La Spezia—marking the city's first university residence—and 55 beds in Savona. To ensure affordability, ministerial guidelines require rental rates to be at least 15% lower than average market values, a condition that must be maintained for at least 12 years.
Approximately 30% of the total capacity, or 112 beds, is reserved for high-achieving students from low-income families who are recipients of Aliseo scholarships. This initiative follows recent trends in Genoa, where the average monthly cost for a single room has risen to 408 euros, an 11.9% increase over the past year.
