Liguria journalists protest alleged police censorship of crime news

Journalists in Liguria are protesting against alleged censorship by law enforcement agencies, claiming that information regarding crimes such as robberies, sexual violence, and stabbings is being withheld. Local journalistic organizations, including the Order of Journalists of Liguria, argue that authorities are suppressing news to avoid ‘creating social alarm.’ They further report being denied access to police stations and headquarters, receiving only information related to routine patrols.

In response to these allegations, members of the Democratic Party (PD) have filed a parliamentary inquiry directed at Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. The deputies are seeking clarification on whether official directives exist that limit journalists' access to crime information or if unofficial practices are being implemented in the region. While acknowledging the necessity of respecting investigative secrecy and the presumption of innocence, the lawmakers are calling for an investigation to ensure that preventive evaluations do not become a generalized filter on information accessible to citizens.
